About WIMSE

Weekly Colloquium in Cawthon

Each week, first-year WIMSE LLC students gather for the WIMSE colloquium,  a one credit hour course taken during the fall and spring semesters of freshman year. It is held once a week for 90 mminutes, conveniently located on the first floor of Cawthon Hall! The WIMSE Director and graduate student Program Coordinator lead members in personal and professional development activities. The highlight of each semester is the opportunity to visit 3 active FSU research laboratories, across the spectrum of STEM fields. These lab visits connect first-year students with faculty and provide the opportunity to explore what research is actually like!

Fall semester topics include: stress and time management, study skills,  Group Curiosity Project, and a panel with upperclassmen WIMSE's.

Spring semester topics include: resume building, professional networking, professional dress, and panels of WIMSE graduates in STEM careers and graduate degree programs.

After Freshman Year

The support for WIMSE students continues after students leave the living-learning community and Cawthon Hall through the WIMSE Society. The Society was created so the WIMSE Program could continue to support students past the freshman year through things like the Research Experience Program and awards. The WIMSE Student Activities Council is the representative and activities board for the Society and is made up of committees to address social activities, service activities, and recruitment efforts. In addition, two sophomore students return to the WIMSE hall each year to act as Hall Mentors.

Above & Beyond

Students who really love their WIMSE experience have two opportunities to become leaders in the Society; we believe WIMSE should be led by you, the student!

WIMSE mentors are sophmore students selected to live on the WIMSE floor in Cawthon Hall. Typically 2 mentors are selected and help to serve as liaisons between the WIMSE staff and the students. Mentors keep students informed, help with the transition to college, and promotes WIMSE to a new class of students coming to the residence hall.

The WIMSE Student Activities Council (SAC) is a group of students that plan all of the social, service, and recruitment activities for WIMSE! SAC is comprised of a Director and three volunteer committee chairs. The group meets every other week to make plans and implement programs to help WIMSE students connect academically and socially. Some of the events planned by SAC are a day at the FSU Rez, Girl Scout badge day, dessert socials, Relay for Life, and more.
