About WIMSE

Tuesdays at 4

Each week, first-year WIMSE LLC students gather for the WIMSE colloquium (fancy word for a "special topics" class). The colloquium is one of the cornerstones of WIMSE! The class is structured to allow for team-building, STEM learning, and hands on experiences. Students are assigned a book each semester, and will work in groups to compete related assignments. WIMSE also has a network of faculty partners on campus who open up their research labs to our students; this is one of the most highly enjoyed activities! Guest speakers from around the country come to share experiences in STEM careers, and students can spend one-on-one time with these mentors. We also schedule fun activities to help build community, like pottery painting or bowling in the student union! The colloquium meets once a week during the Fall and Spring semesters, and students receive a one-credit hour letter grade for their participation.

After Freshman Year

This is really the heart of WIMSE, the Research Experience Program (REP). WIMSE provides our students with the opportunity to participate in current research in their chosen field, and get paid to do it! For students in STEM fields, this is a tremendous advantage that will really set you apart when you're looking for a job or applying to graduate school in the future. In the Spring, WIMSE hosts a Research Symposium to showcase the work of our REP students – this event is open to students, faculty, staff, friends and family! REP is optional but strongly encouraged, and it's completely customizable to your specific interests. It's one of the best kept secrets on campus.

Above & Beyond

Students who really love their WIMSE experience have two opportunities to get involved from the inside; we believe WIMSE should be led by you, the student!

WIMSE Mentors are students selected to live on the WIMSE floor in Cawthon Hall after their freshman year. Typically 2-3 Mentors are selected and help to serve as a liaison between the WIMSE staff and the students. Mentors help with keeping students informed, planning social events, helping students transition, and also helping to promote WIMSE to a new class of students coming to the residence hall.

The WIMSE Student Activities Council (SAC) is a group of students that plan all of the academic, social and service events for WIMSE! SAC is comprised of a paid Director and three volunteer committee chairs. The group meets every other week to make plans and implement programs to help WIMSE students connect and have fun. Some of the events planned by SAC are camping and low ropes at the Seminole Reservation, Girl Scout badge day, dessert socials, Relay for Life, and more.
